IESweep Questions

  1. When I run TweakIE, I get a message saying that my data files have grown too big. Is there a way to disable this?

Since one of the main reasons TweakIE was written was to fix the .DAT file bug in Internet Explorer, we did not make a way to disable this notification. This message will only appear if your data files have exceeded the size that you set on the Preferences Tab. At that point the data files begin to adversely affect Internet Explorer, and IESweep should be run.

  2. I run IESweep and nothing happens. How can I fix this?

Make sure that you have selected items to clear on the Preferences Tab.

  3. After running IESweep, I look in my Temporary Internet Files folder and see that it is full of cookies. Why isn't IESweep getting rid of them and how do I get rid of them?

The *cookies* that you are seeing in your Temporary Internet Files folder are not really located there. The Temporary Internet Files folder is a *shell folder* which is sort of like a virtual folder. It is comprised of 4 separate folders which Explorer shows you as one. Explorer also reads the contents of the INDEX.DAT file in the Cookies folder and shows all of the cookies listed in that file as files in the Temporary Internet Files folder. Those cookies may or may not still exist on your system.

  4. After running IESweep, why are my Windows Temp files not deleted?

Unfortunately, since a file cannot be deleted if it is in use, those files are not actually deleted until Windows is restarted. Please keep this in mind if you run IESweep and then do not restart Windows and then install a program. That program may need to restart your system and will rely on files in your Temp folder, however those files will be removed by IESweep and the installation will fail.

  5. After running IESweep, how do I know if it did its job of clearing the History and Cache?

    For IE3x users:

    1. Check the History in Windows Explorer. The folder by default is: C:\Windows\History. Make sure it is empty.

    2. Check the Cache in Windows Explorer. The folder by default is: C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files. Make sure it is empty.

    3. Go to Start | Find | Files or folders. Type: mm*.dat in Named, make sure that your hard drive is being searched in Look In, then click on Find Now. It should find a number of files named both mm256.dat and mm2048.dat. Make sure that each is approximately 8,192 bytes or 8KB. If any are larger, then something is not being deleted correctly; please email Tech Support.

    4. Make sure that you have run Internet Explorer at least once after running IESweep to be sure that the folders and files have been rebuilt.

    For IE4x and IE5x users:

Go to the Preferences Tab and click on the Show Current Sizes button. Make sure that the sizes are each less than 64KB.

You will need to simply pay the upgrade fee of $10.00 US to upgrade to version 2.5. Please visit the TweakIE home page.

  7. I Installed the program; now when I run it, it asks for a registration code. How do I get one?

  8. I installed the program, but when I enter the registration code I received, it says "Registration Unsuccessful." What should I do?

    Installation Questions

  10. If I'm upgrading from TweakIE 1.0x or TweakIE 2.0 or 2.1, do I need to download the whole program, or is there a patch?

Since we upgraded many of the DLL and OCX files included with TweakIE 2.5, we were unable to simply provide an upgrade patch; therefore, you'll need to download the program in its entirety.

  11. Can I install TweakIE 2.5 over TweakIE 1.0x, 2.0 or 2.1?

Yes. TweakIE 2.5's setup program includes a migration feature which will automatically update your system to TweakIE 2.5.

  12. I downloaded the file tie25w9x.exe. Now what?

Simply run the program from wherever you downloaded it to, and it will start the setup program automatically.

  13. During the installation of TweakIE, the setup program tells me it is going to replace certain files. What should I do?

The TweakIE setup program uses version checking to determine the version of any files that it needs to copy onto your system. If it finds a file with the same or newer version already on your system, then the file is not overwritten. This is the safest method there is for installing shared files.

    General Program Questions

  14. Is there a demo copy of TweakIE?

Yes. Simply download the TweakIE 2.5 installation file (tie25w9x.exe) and run it. This will install TweakIE 2.5, which will run in an unregistered trial mode for 30 days.

  15. Can I delete the file tie25w9x.exe after I have installed TweakIE 2.1?

Yes. You can either delete it or move it to another location in case you need to reinstall later.

  16. Where can I find more information about exactly what TweakIE does?

    Read the TweakIE Help File.

  17. I cannot download TweakIE due to Content Advisor restrictions. What should I do?

You should be able to access all of the TweakIE pages, as they have all been registered with the lowest ratings. If you still cannot download the program, you have two alternatives: 1) Try downloading via the FTP link (ftp.wizsys.com/pub/tweakie/tie25w9x.exe) rather than the HTTP link; or 2) you may order a copy of TweakIE on CD.

  18. I need to disable my Content Advisor, but when I try to use that feature it asks for a password. How do I get one?

You must either send an email to advisor@wizsys.com or call us at 1-888-486-0600. If we already have information on file that shows you are an adult, we will give you a password. Otherwise you will be asked to provide proof that you are an adult.

    Compatibility Questions

  22. When I go the the Outlook Express tab, one of the buttons is disabled. Why?

You are running Internet Explorer 5.0 and this feature is not compatible with that version of Internet Explorer.

  23. When I run Mail/News Sweep on the Outlook Express tab and check either Mail Sweep or News Sweep, the other one is automatically checked as well. How do I sweep only one?

You are running Internet Explorer 5.0 and since ALL message files are now stored in the same file formats in the same folder, all must be deleted.

  24. When I run TweakIE and click on either the Outlook Express, Internet Mail and News or Shell Enhancements tabs, I get a system crash error. What should I do?

This is caused by either McAfee's Crash Monitor or some versions of Norton CrashGuard. You must disable any crash monitoring software by right-clicking on the icon in the system tray and choosing "disable."

  25. Can I use TweakIE to backup Microsoft Outlook 97/98/2000?

No. TweakIE was designed for use with Internet Explorer and the mail and news programs included with Internet Explorer; hence the name: "Tweak I.E." Therefore it will not work with any other mail and/or news programs.

  26. Is TweakIE compatible with Windows NT or 2000?

No. TweakIE 3.0, which is targeted for June, 2000, will be compatible with Millenium, Windows NT and 2000.

    Error Messages / Problems

  27. When I run TweakIE and click on either the Outlook Express, Internet Mail and News or Shell Enhancements tabs, I get a system crash error. What should I do?

This is caused by either McAfee's Crash Monitor, First Aid 97 or some versions of Norton CrashGuard. You must disable any crash monitoring software by right-clicking on the icon in the system tray and choosing disable.

  28. I am getting error messages saying either 'Key name is bad' or 'Undefinded key error code' or other errors when trying to run certain features on either the Internet Mail and News or the Outlook Express tab. Why is this happening?

If you have Exchange, Windows Messaging, Pegasus, Eudora or any other email program you may encounter these errors. Also, if you have Outlook 97/98 or Internet Mail and News installed with IE4.x and do not have Outlook Express installed, the features on the Outlook Express tab will not function. If you do have Outlook Express installed with Outlook 97/98, Outlook interferes with TweakIE's ability to interact with Outlook Express and some features may not function correctly. One thing you can try, if you are experiencing problems with the Backup feature, is to uncheck Address Book.

  29. Why is the Internet Mail and News tab still greyed out after I register TweakIE?

You are using IE4 or higher. Internet Mail and News was the email / newsreader program that was included with IE3x.

  30. Even after I registered TweakIE, there is a red X over IESweep. What should I do?

The red X on the IESweep button is part of the graphic image for that button; it is not an indication that that feature is disabled.
